Session 6

Session 6.1

1. Do you believe that videos can lead to innovation in the classroom? Explain your answer.
Yes, I believe videos can lead to innovation in the foreign language classroom. If students are able to communicate through videos, they are using the language. If they are able to have a dialogue through video, they are able to use speaking, which is often the most difficult aspect of the language to find time for every student to practice. Videos allow students to hear the language as well.
2. How does Prezi, the tool that Chris Anderson uses in the video, differ from traditional presentation tools for the classroom?
With Prezi, students are able to create their own videos on one canvas instead of slides and interact through their videos. They are able to create a web-based video, then present it.

Session 6.2

foreign language videos

A little slow to load video, wasnt every actually able to see the videos, but could hear the sound. May not be good for students with varying levels of technology at home, but may work in the classroom

teacher tube (french)

I have used teacher tube before in research, though never in the classroom. I would like to incorporate more short clips to show my students at the beginning of class

watch know learn

Similar to teacher tube, however I liked the interface a little more. Seemed easier to use and more organized. Directed you to other websites.

Session 6.3

  • Frame: Provide a context that helps students pay attention to the main content of the video. Ask students questions about the topic explored in the video to activate prior knowledge. When necessary, tell your students enough about the part of the story preceding the segment, so they can follow along.
  • Focus: Help students notice the important moments in the video by providing them with a specific focus, something to look for while they watch. Without a focus for viewing, students see all sorts of interesting details - but not necessarily the idea or information you want them to focus on.
  • Follow-up: Provide an opportunity for students to summarize what they saw - because they will see different things, and not always what you expected them to see! Re-telling what they saw helps students consolidate their understanding and remember it.

Session 6.6 - Create your own prezi

I had some difficulty using prezi even though it seems pretty straightforward. At one point, I went to another website for some information, but when I came back, I was out of editing mode on my prezi. I was no longer able to edit. So I went back to my main screen on prezi, could see my prezi there, but when I clicked on edit, or presentation, or any of the buttons, nothing happened. I then updated my browser and those difficulties were resolved.
I like the idea of prezi and I think our students will have less trouble than I did. It seems pretty straightforward and easy to use. I like how you can include a lot of information without it getting cluttered. You could have a very large presentation and consolidate it into one page. I am excited to see what I can do with this, as well as what my students will be able to do with this.
